Sport and the Environment: A Double Impact Game
The relationship between the world of sport and the environment is complex and multifaceted, with both negative and positive impacts. On the one hand, sports activities and their infrastructure can generate a significant environmental footprint; on the other, sport has enormous potential to raise awareness, educate, and promote sustainability.
Major sporting events (Olympic Games, World Cups, tennis tournaments, etc.) attract millions of spectators, athletes, and traveling staff, generating enormous greenhouse gas emissions from flights, vehicles, and other modes of transport. It is estimated that 85% of the emissions from an event like the European Championship come from travel and accommodation. Furthermore, the manufacturing of sportswear and footwear clearly contributes to environmental pollution due to the use of resources, manufacturing processes, and garment disposal.
Rising temperatures and more frequent and prolonged heat waves pose a risk to the health of athletes, especially in outdoor activities, and the lack of natural snow has become an obstacle to winter sports. At the same time, public figures in sports can inspire millions of people to adopt greener behaviors by communicating the importance of sustainable practices. Recognizing the negative impacts and actively working on sustainable solutions is crucial to ensuring that sport remains a positive force, able to address challenges so that it does not reach the point of no return.
