Tactical Substitutions in Elite Soccer
Analysis of the Finalist Teams of the 2018 FIFA World Cup
Abstract
Introduction: Contemporary soccer is characterized by high tactical complexity and intense physical demands, in which strategic decisions can significantly influence team performance. In this context, the FIFA World Cup represents the foremost setting for observing trends in elite soccer, particularly following the introduction of the fourth substitution during extra time in the 2018 edition. Objective: To analyze the effectiveness of tactical substitutions performed by the four finalist teams of the 2018 FIFA World Cup (France, Croatia, Belgium, and England), considering the direct contribution of substitute players through goals and assists, as well as to classify the motivations associated with each substitution. Methods: A mixed-methods study was conducted through the analysis of 24 matches using official FIFA scouting data and systematic video observation. Substitutions were classified through thematic content analysis into six categories: score-related necessity, technical necessity, physical necessity, game management, introduction of new players, and defensive tactical adjustment with an established lead. Results: A predominance of substitutions motivated by physical necessity was observed, particularly during the knockout stages. Belgium demonstrated the highest offensive effectiveness among substitute players, recording three goals and one assist, whereas France and England showed no direct goal involvement from substitutes. Conclusion: The effectiveness of substitutions in elite soccer depends on the competitive context and the coach’s strategic intent, involving not only direct offensive contributions but also the maintenance of the team’s tactical and physical stability.
