Physical Education and the Development of Knowledge Regarding Sleep and Physical Exercise in Brazil

Abstract

Background: The relationship between sleep and physical exercise has gained increasing attention in scientific literature, particularly in light of the growing prevalence of sleep disorders and physical inactivity in the Brazilian population. Consolidating this interface requires articulation between chronobiology, public health, and professional training. Objective: To critically analyze the role of the Physical Education professional in the development and application of knowledge regarding sleep and physical exercise in Brazil. Methods: This study consists of a critical theoretical-analytical essay grounded in contemporary scientific literature, national epidemiological data, and theoretical frameworks from chronobiology and sociology of science, emphasizing the interface between professional training, clinical practice, and public health policies. Conclusions: The analysis suggests that Physical Education professionals occupy a strategic position in the prescription of non-pharmacological sleep-related interventions and in combating physical inactivity and chronic non-communicable diseases. Greater curricular integration, strengthened multiprofessional practice within the Unified Health System (SUS), and expanded scientific production are indicated to consolidate this emerging field in Brazil.
