High-Speed Resistance Training and Mobility in Older Adults. A Systematic Review
Abstract
This systematic review aimed to assess the effectiveness of high-speed resistance training in improving mobility in older adults with movement limitations. A total of 1,667 articles were initially identified from the PubMed, Web of Science, Scopus, Embase, and Lilacs databases. Of these, 1,489 were screened and 6 were selected for inclusion in the study, with a sample of 374 older adults (118 men and 256 women), aged between 65 and 94 years. The Short Physical Performance Battery (SPPB) was the most commonly used tool to assess mobility (83.3%). All studies showed improvements in mobility and/or lower limb muscle power. The methodological quality of the studies ranged from 12 to 13 points on the Testex scale (maximum of 15). It was concluded that high-speed resistance training is effective in improving mobility in older adults with mobility limitations.
