The Story of Euro 1964: a Relevant Event in the World of European Soccer

Abstract

The UEFA European Championship began in 1960 with the name of "Cup of Nations of Europe". In its second edition in 1964 four teams participated: Spain, the Soviet Union, Hungary and Denmark. The final was held at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium between the local team and the Soviets. Finally the Spanish triumphed in extra time after the game ended 1-1 in regulation time. It was an exciting final for a hugely attended event that is now an integral part of the European football world.
