Dissemination and Implementation of Physical Activity Programs for People with Pre-Hypertensive: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Studies on disease prevention for people with prehypertension through physical activity have gained prominence. However, a point to be further investigated is the potential of these studies on providing essential information for public health policy development. Thus, this literature review aims to analyze whether physical activity programs for people with prehypertension meet the external and internal validity dimensions using the RE-AIM model. Searches were performed in PubMed, Scopus, Virtual Health Library, and PsycINFO (2007-2017) databases in English, Portuguese, and Spanish, resulting in 15 out of 65,870 articles. The majority of programs focused on aerobic activities (3.3%), and blood pressure reduction was observed (93.33%). However, 67.2% of the RE-AIM items were not mentioned, with low results on the target population/participants, effectiveness, characteristics of the team/organization and implementation. No maintenance data was observed. Although studies of physical activity programs for people with prehypertension report that physical activity helps lower blood pressure and provides information on its internal validity, there is little to no information on external validity needed to guide public health policies and identify impacts on the reality of the community. The conclusion is that the articles do not report on the dimensions of the RE-AIM framework, which hinders the analysis of the external and internal validity of physical activity programs for people with prehypertension. This information is necessary to guide public health policies and better impact communities.
