University Weight Training and Health Promotion: Participants’ Profile, Readiness, and Adherence

Abstract

Objective: To analyze the sociodemographic and anthropometric profile, readiness for physical activity, and adherence patterns of participants in a university resistance training program. Method: This is a cross-sectional study conducted with 379 participants from the Academia Escola Program at the Federal University of Mato Grosso do Sul - UFMS Sociodemographic, behavioral, and anthropometric data were collected through structured anamnesis. Readiness for physical activity was assessed using the Physical Activity Readiness Questionnaire (PAR-Q). Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and the chi-square test, adopting a significance level of 5 % (p<0.05). Results: A predominance of females (54.9 %), a mean age of 24.45 years, and a higher proportion of eutrophic individuals (51.6 %) were observed. Most participants reported a weekly frequency of three to five times (60.2 %), less than two years of practice (81.0 %), and a beginner level (57.8 %). Regarding readiness, 91.3 % were classified as fit. No statistically significant associations were found between BMI classification and weekly practice frequency (p=0.403), nor between BMI and readiness for physical activity (p=0.812). Conclusion: Resistance training in a university context involves a predominantly young, fit population with a practice frequency consistent with health recommendations, regardless of BMI classification. The findings reinforce the importance of institutional programs in promoting healthy habits.
