Self-Perception of Health and Well-Being of Older Adults in Iquique

Study of Participants in the Elderly in Movement Program

Abstract

Population aging presents significant challenges for health systems worldwide, especially in Chile, where it is projected that by 2050, 24 % of the population will be over 60 years old. This age group of older adults faces a higher prevalence of chronic diseases, functional dependence, and mental health problems. In response to this issue, this research seeks to determine the self-perceived health of older adults participating in physical activity programs at the National Sports Institute (NSI) in Iquique. The methodology is quantitative and descriptive, using the measurement instrument from the National Survey of Quality of Life in Old Age, specifically the "health condition" item, focusing on dimensions such as self-perceived health, health problems, physical activity, mental health, and day centers. The sample consists of 61 people, 44 women and 17 men. The results show that 50.8% of the participating older adults perceive their health as good, while 23 % consider it excellent. Likewise, those who engage in regular physical activity have a lower incidence of chronic problems, leading to greater levels of physical and emotional well-being in this age group. In conclusion, based on existing evidence, physical activity programs improve self-perceived health, and this improvement in health perception is evident in this group of older adults.
