‘Now I Understand Myself Better’. Narratives on Regular Physical Activity and Psychological Well-being in Adults
Abstract
The aim of this study is to explore the relationships between regular physical activity (PA) and psychological well-being, based on the participants' perceptions and experiences. Using a qualitative and interpretative design, in-depth semi-structured interviews were conducted with five adults (N=5) who had incorporated regular PA into their lives after a period of physical inactivity. The collected data were examined using a thematic content analysis, combining deductive and inductive strategies. The findings indicate that regular PA is positively associated with the dimensions of Ryff’s model, especially with self-acceptance and autonomy. In addition, the results highlight the relevance of self-determined motivations, enjoyment, and the free choice of activity as key elements that strengthen this relationship and act as facilitators of long-term adherence to PA. The study emphasizes the importance of further exploring personal narratives and lived experiences to better understand the connections between regular PA and psychological well-being. A qualitative lens is proposed to complement the existing literature and contribute to identifying tools, resources, and strategies that promote physically active and healthy lifestyles.
