Athletics in the Context of Motor Development: Possibilities for the Acquisition and Refinement of Motor Skills
Abstract
Motor development is a continuous and essential process for human growth, particularly during childhood and adolescence. This narrative review aimed to analyze the role of athletics as a pedagogical and scientific tool in promoting motor development and the acquisition of fundamental motor skills. The literature indicates that athletics movements correspond directly to core human motor categories, forming an effective foundation for motor literacy and sports learning. Evidence shows that pedagogical programs based on playfulness, task variability, and progressions appropriate to developmental stages enhance not only motor competence but also cognitive, social, and affective dimensions. Furthermore, inclusive practices and methodological adaptations expand access and participation among diverse populations, including children with disabilities. The study highlights the importance of teacher training and educational policies that integrate athletics in a contextualized way, ensuring diverse and meaningful motor experiences. It is concluded that athletics, when pedagogically structured, represents a privileged environment for global motor development, the promotion of active lifestyles, and the construction of essential competencies for sports and daily life.
