The Importance of the Physical Education Professional in the Perception of Physical Exercise Practitioners
A Study Conducted in a Park in the City of Curitiba, PR
Abstract
Physical exercise is essential for health, and although public parks encourage its practice, the lack of professional supervision in these spaces may pose risks to the physical integrity of participants. The main objective was to analyze the characteristics of physical exercise practices carried out in a park in the city of Curitiba, Paraná, and to assess the importance attributed to the Physical Education professional regarding the prescription and supervision of the activities performed. Thirty adult participants (18 men and 12 women) answered in person a semi-structured questionnaire with 12 closed questions, focusing on the importance attributed to the Physical Education professional. A qualitative, descriptive, and cross-sectional analysis was carried out. First, the data was tabulated and organized in an Excel spreadsheet. Subsequently, the data were transformed into charts and analyzed through descriptive statistics and frequency distribution. Most participants (73 %) engage in physical exercise focusing on health and quality of life. The same percentage (73 %) consider the supervision of a professional important or essential, although 80 % report not seeking such guidance due to related costs. Nevertheless, 77 % were in favor of the hiring of professionals by the City Hall to work in the park. Public policies providing professionals to supervise physical exercise in public parks seem to be a promising demand for safe and effective practice.
