Adherence to Weight Training among Dance Practitioners: A Systematic Review
Abstract
Dance, although characterized as an artistic form of expression, imposes high physical demands on its practitioners, requiring strength, endurance, and neuromuscular control. In this context, strength training emerges as a relevant complementary strategy for performance enhancement and injury prevention. The aim of this study was to analyze, through a systematic review, the factors associated with adherence to strength training among dance practitioners. The search was conducted in Google Scholar, considering publications from 2019 to 2024, using descriptors related to dance, strength training, and adherence. Following the processes of identification, screening, and eligibility, six studies were included in the qualitative synthesis, according to PRISMA 2020 guidelines. The findings indicate that adherence to strength training is mainly associated with perceived benefits in physical performance, increased muscular strength, and injury prevention. Conversely, barriers such as time constraints, aesthetic beliefs, and lack of specialized professional guidance still limit the systematic incorporation of this practice. It is concluded that educational strategies and individualized training programs may enhance adherence to strength training in dance, contributing to practitioners’ health, performance, and career longevity.
