The Body in Motion: Towards Interdisciplinary Integration between Kinesiology and Physical Education

Abstract

This work analyzes the epistemological relationship between physical education and kinesiology, identifying their disciplinary tensions and their potential for interdisciplinary integration around the moving body as a shared object of study. It proposes a critical reading of both disciplines that problematizes the technical complementarity often attributed to them, understanding them instead as scientific, pedagogical, and political discourses that converge on a common object of study. From an epistemological perspective, the hegemony of positivism has fostered a fragmentation of knowledge that limits critical reflection, promoting biomedical reductionism in kinesiology and technical-sports approaches in physical education. Historically, physical education has oscillated between mechanistic conceptions of the body and innovative efforts such as psychomotor skills, motor praxeology, and critical-sociocultural approaches. Both disciplines share a crisis of foundation, a persistent tension between theory and practice, and pressure for professionalization. Overcoming these limitations requires moving towards transdisciplinary models based on complex thinking, integrating the biological, pedagogical, social, and cultural dimensions of human movement. Within this framework, interdisciplinarity must promote the construction of new analytical categories capable of addressing contemporary problems related to health, education, and well-being. Dialogue between kinesiology and physical education is proposed as an opportunity to generate emancipatory practices in which the body is understood as a territory of knowledge and rights, articulating technical intervention, critical reflection, and socio-historical commitment.
