Adapted Training for Young Paralympic Athletes in the Long Jump Discipline

A Case Study

Abstract

Obstetric brachial palsy (OBP) presents unique challenges in Paralympic athletic development, particularly in asymmetrical disciplines such as the long jump. This study evaluated the effects of a 32-week adapted training program (AT) on a 16-year-old male athlete in the T46 category. The intervention structured five weekly sessions integrating principles of Therapeutic Physical Culture (TPC) and Functional Training System (FTS), prioritizing performance optimization and preventive protocols. The results demonstrated significant improvements in biomechanical parameters (gait symmetry, stride efficiency) and physical abilities (strength, power, core stability). Psychologically, resilience, intrinsic motivation, and positive perception of training increased, strengthening adherence. This case demonstrates the impact of personalized interventions based on TPC and FTS on the athletic development of athletes with PBO. The main objective of this research was to evaluate the effectiveness of an adapted training program (ATP), based on principles of Therapeutic Physical Culture (TPC) and functional training system (FTS), in improving athletic performance and preventing injuries in a young Paralympic long jumper with obstetric brachial palsy (OBP).
