Epidemiological Profile of Injuries in Wushu Sanda Athletes

Abstract

This study aimed to assess the incidence and profile of injuries among Wushu Sanda athletes during the 2025 Brazilian Championship, identifying injury rates and associated factors. A retrospective, quantitative, descriptive cohort design was used with 86 athletes (56 men and 30 women). Data were collected via semi-structured interviews covering sociodemographics, injury history and details, and exposure time. Analyses included descriptive statistics and injury incidence per 1,000 hours of exposure. All athletes reported at least one injury—predominantly hamstring and adductor strains and facial lacerations. The overall incidence was 3.37 injuries/1,000 h. Complex injuries (ligament ruptures and fractures) were less frequent. Findings highlight the need for prior mechanical assessments and rigorous use of facial and lower-limb protective gear to reduce Sanda injuries. The retrospective design and non-probabilistic sample limit generalizability. Prospective multicenter studies and advanced biomechanical analyses are recommended to elucidate injury mechanisms.
