When Sport Develops Citizenship: Beyond Performance

  • Diana Gujer Independiente

Abstract

Physical Education is more than a practical subject; it is a tool for social and civic education. Through sport, civic skills such as negotiation, respect for rules, conflict resolution, and teamwork are developed. Games acts as a universal language that promotes inclusion and cohesion, especially for students from different social backgrounds or with academic difficulties. Projects in the region demonstrate the positive impact of well-guided sports practice, where the teacher acts as an ethical and cultural mediator. Sport also teaches about effort and resilience. Finally, it is crucial to address gender inequality in this area and promote public policies that integrate sport as an essential component of citizenship education.
