Effects of Resistance Exercise in Hypertensive Older Adults: An Integrative Review

Abstract

Aging is a natural and inevitable process characterized by physiological transformations that progressively affect the human body. At this stage of life, health care must encompass all its dimensions physical, psychological, and social mainly due to the emergence of chronic diseases, among which arterial hypertension stands out. This condition overloads the cardiac muscle and requires greater circulatory effort, potentially leading to cardiovascular complications. In this context, resistance exercise helps mitigate biological markers inherent to the disease, contributing to its prevention and assisting in the control of resting blood pressure. Therefore, the present study aimed to analyze the effects of resistance exercise on the health of older adults with arterial hypertension through an integrative literature review, systematically conducted following PRISMA 2020 guidelines and structured based on the PICOS model. The research gathered evidence from randomized clinical trials that demonstrated the acute and chronic effects of this training on blood pressure control, reinforcing its benefits for the health of the elderly population.
