AtraParkour: An Innovative Proposal to Promote Adherence to Physical Activity in Physical Education

Abstract

Low adherence to physical activity is one of the major contemporary challenges in both educational and health contexts. To address this issue and promote active lifestyles from an early age, the AtraParkour experience is presented—an alternative sport that merges the playful pursuit of traditional tag with parkour elements and the competitive logic of World Chase Tag. The aim of this study was to analyze the impact of its implementation on motivation, enjoyment, and perceived motor competence among secondary school students, in order to assess its potential as a methodological strategy to foster adherence to physical activity in the school setting. The proposal was designed for use in Physical Education classes and recreational contexts, employing accessible materials and mobile structures adaptable to various environments. Its pedagogical foundations, the characteristics of the play area (Parkour Park), general rules, and three main modalities -classic, individual, and numbered- are described. The results revealed high student engagement, improved perception of motor competence, and a high level of enjoyment, all of which are key factors in sustaining physical activity over time. This experience aligns with the principles of meaningful learning, the competency-based approach, and Self-Determination Theory, establishing itself as an effective and inclusive pedagogical tool for promoting physical activity in schools through play, creativity, and intrinsic motivation.
