Physical Activity and Intensity of School Recesses. A Systematic Review
Abstract
Objective: To know the level of Physical Activity and intensity of breaks measured by accelerometry during the school day. Method: An exhaustive search was carried out in different databases, such as PubMed, Web of Science (WoS), SportDiscus, ScienceDirect, Embase, Scopus, and Bireme following the guidelines of the PRISMA model. The articles reviewed were cross-sectional or observational, considering all the scientific literature published to date. As a search strategy, the following keywords were used: (Intensity OR level OR “physical activity” OR exercise) AND (recess OR playground OR break) AND (accelerometer) AND children). Results: The search strategy yielded 4,513 studies, of which 20 investigations met the eligibility criteria, showing how the practice of physical activity and free play during school recess has a positive impact on compliance with the recommendations of physical activity in children and teenagers. Conclusion: The adequate practice of MVPA during school recess can contribute positively to the recommended daily physical activity and has the potential to impact schools and increase the physical condition of schoolchildren positively.
