Relationship between Physical Exercise Intensity and Cognitive Improvement in Adults with Neurodevelopmental Disorders

An Integrative Review

Abstract

Introduction: Neurodevelopmental disorders affect essential cognitive functions, impacting the quality of life of individuals, as seen in Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). Physical exercise has been highlighted as an effective non-pharmacological intervention for improving cognitive functions, especially executive functions. Objective: This study aims to investigate the relationship between the intensity of physical training and cognitive improvements in adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Methodology: An integrative literature review was conducted using the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, studies published between 2010 and 2023 that evaluated the intensity of physical training and its effects on the cognition of adults with neurodevelopmental disorders were included. Results: The reviewed studies demonstrated that the intensity of physical training significantly influences executive functions in adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. Moderate to high-intensity training showed greater efficacy in improving cognitive functions compared to low-intensity exercises. Conclusion: Physical training, especially at moderate to high intensities, can be an effective intervention for improving cognitive functions in adults with neurodevelopmental disorders. However, further research is needed to define the ideal intensity and better understand the underlying mechanisms.
