The Importance of Physical Education in Child Motor Development: An Integrative Review
Abstract
Motor development is a continuous process characterized by changes in motor behavior that are perfected throughout life. Physical Education can improve the motor, psychological, social and cultural development of school-aged children. The objective of this work was to carry out a critical review of the literature in order to identify and describe the importance of Physical Education in motor development in childhood. This is a bibliographic study of the integrative literature review type. The Pubmed, Scielo and Lilacs databases were explored between August and November 2021 by applying the following descriptors crossed with each other through the Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”: Physical Education; Child development; Motor Skills. 68 studies were found. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 12 academic articles were selected, including 10 field studies, a cross-sectional survey and a case study. Current literature highlights the importance of Physical Education professionals in children's motor development, positively participating in the acquisition and refinement of motor performance, cognitive maturity, basic and fundamental motor skills, fine and gross motor skills, motor coordination, balance and physical aptitude.
