Association between TUG and Functional Capacity in Elderly Candidates for Cardiac Rehabilitation
Abstract
Introduction: Increased life expectancy has been associated with reduced muscle strength and increased risk of loss of mobility and functional capacity, resulting in changes in the elderly's functionality. The aging process has been correlated with a gradual increase in predisposition to the disease, however, this is accentuated in the presence of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), currently being one of the main causes of physical disability and mortality in the elderly population. Aim: To assess whether there is a relationship between performance on the Timed Up and Go test (TUG), handgrip strength (HGS) and functional capacity in candidates for a cardiac rehabilitation program (CRP). Methods: Cross-sectional study comprising 14 patients (66.5±6.6 years, 11 men) entering a Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (Phase II) of a university hospital in Brazil. The HGS was performed through dynamometry and functional capacity through the 6-minute walk test (6MWT). Results: There was moderate negative correlation between the TUG and the 6MWT (r=-0.535; p=0.049) and the moderate positive correlation between the predicted values of HGS and 6MWT (right upper limb: r=0.670, p=0.008) (left upper limb: r=0.644 p=0.012). Conclusions: The findings demonstrated that the decrease in functional capacity was associated with a decrease in functional mobility and agility, suggesting the TUG as an alternative for evaluating patients who are candidates for a CRP with low to moderate functional capacity or with some contraindication to perform a test that requires more cardiovascular effort such as the 6MWT.
