The Concept of Sport: What It Is, Characteristics, and Why It Matters in Physical Education

Abstract

Defining sport is complex due to its diverse perspectives. While academic authors such as García Ferrando and Parlebas emphasize fixed rules, competition, and the institutional framework, perspectives like those of Cagigal and the European Sports Charter broaden the concept to include recreational and informal physical activity. In the educational field, both perspectives coexist: sport develops physical abilities, healthy habits, values, and socialization.

Keywords: Sport, Physical activity, Competition
