Athlete Women, Triumph and Bodily Femininity in Costa Rica
Abstract
This article pursues a dual purpose: first, to determine whether the motivation of Costa Rican female athletes to achieve success is primarily grounded in self-development and the continuous refinement of their capabilities; and second, to examine their perceptions of their own femininity through the lens of the body. To this end, the article analyzes testimonies from the country’s most influential female athletes—published in digital media outlets such as La República and Delfino.CR —selecting statements that directly address both thematic areas. In conclusion, it is argued that the triumphs and physical exertion of these athletes represent a decisive step forward in deconstructing traditional gender roles, by redefining sports participation as a space conducive to female emancipation and self-determination.
