Leisure Time Physical Inactivity among the Sateré-Mawé Indigenous Population in a City in the Interior of Amazonas
Abstract
Introduction: The health status of indigenous populations who migrate to urban centers in Brazil is traditionally overlooked in official surveys and statistics. The present study aimed to verify the prevalence of insufficient physical activity during leisure time in an urban indigenous population in the Brazilian Amazon and its associations with variables. Method: The Sateré-Mawé population in the city of Parintins, aged over 18 (n=174), had their insufficient physical activity measured in minutes per week. Variables were collected on domicile, indigenous socio-cultural ties, socio-economic status, behavior, and biology. A hierarchical logistic model was used, calculating the odds ratio and confidence interval (95 %). Results: Insufficient physical activity in all domains was found to be greater than 60 %, except at work (46.6 %). In the leisure domain, household, behavioral, and biological variables were associated. Conclusion: The majority of the population was insufficiently active in the leisure domain. Indigenous sociocultural ties lost their association with the result in the final model. Studies are needed to highlight the health situation of indigenous populations in urban areas.
