Intelligent Device for Home Pharmacological Organization Support

Abstract

Medication adherence is a global challenge, especially among older adults and individuals with chronic diseases who use multiple drugs, a condition known as polypharmacy, which increases the risk of administration errors and drug interactions that reduce therapeutic effectiveness. Simple strategies, such as the use of pill organizers, have proven effective in reducing failures and improving adherence. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of pill organizers on therapeutic adherence and medication routine organization among Primary Health Care users. This quantitative research was conducted with 72 residents of the Monte Castelo neighborhood in Ivaiporã, Brazil, using organizers produced by the Association for the Protection and Assistance of Convicts (APAC) and distributed with support from Community Health Agents. Home visits occurred in three stages, 45 days apart, involving questionnaires and guidance on the rational use and proper disposal of medicines. Results showed a predominance of older adults, mostly women (66.67 %), and a high illiteracy rate (76.32 %). Regarding autonomy, 35.90 % were fully independent, and 30.77 % had no autonomy. After the intervention, 83.33 % reported improvements in their medication routines, and 86.67 % stated that the organizer helped with treatment adherence. It is concluded that the intervention positively influenced adherence and therapeutic organization, especially among older adults with low literacy levels.
