How International Sporting Events Transform Cities
Abstract
International sporting events, such as the Euro 2025 U21 semifinals and the ATP/WTA tournaments in June 2025, demonstrate their profound impact on host cities and regional economic growth. These competitions generate billions in revenue, attract mass tourism, and boost sports marketing, benefiting the cities. In addition to economic gains, they drive infrastructural transformations, with investments in stadiums and training centers, and have a significant sociocultural impact by uniting communities and promoting values such as gender equality. They also serve as a laboratory for sustainable approaches and integrate technological innovations such as virtual reality and artificial intelligence, thus laying new foundations for future mega-sporting events.
