Adapted Training System for a Young Man with Congenital Muscular Dystrophy

Case Study

Abstract

Congenital Muscular Dystrophy (CMD) is a hereditary neuromuscular disorder that, from birth, significantly limits motor function and overall well-being. The overall objective is to analyze the impact of an Adapted Training System (ATS), based on Therapeutic Physical Culture (TPC) and structured periodization, on the functional capacity, muscle strength, and quality of life of a young woman with CMS in Guayaquil, Ecuador, over a 24-week period. A qualitative approach was implemented using a case study design, combining the review of clinical records, semi-structured interviews, validated psychometric tests, and systematic observation. The rehabilitation program, divided into three progressive stages, emphasized biomechanical protection, personalized effort management, and the generalization of skills to the daily environment. The findings reflected substantial progress in physical independence, emotional management, and self-perception of achievements, accompanied by a reduction in psychosocial barriers. The consolidation of self-confidence and the support of the immediate family emerged as essential pillars for the continuity of the therapeutic process. Consequently, it was established that a biopsychosocial strategy, adapted to environments with material constraints, transforms the experience of patients with DMC.
