Combined Physical Exercise and Arterial Stiffness in Hypertensive and Pre-Hypertensive Individuals. A Systematic Review
Abstract
Arterial stiffness is an important indicator of vascular aging and is associated with the risk of cardiovascular diseases and mortality. Several interventions have been proposed to reduce arterial stiffness, especially in hypertensive and prehypertensive individuals. In recent years, combined physical exercise has been investigated for its impact on this marker. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of combined physical exercise on arterial stiffness in hypertensive and prehypertensive individuals. To this end, a systematic review was conducted following the PRISMA guidelines, searching the PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, LILACS, and Google Scholar databases. A total of 2,675 articles were identified, of which only three met the eligibility criteria and were included in the analysis. Pulse wave velocity (PWV) was the primary measure used to assess arterial stiffness, being present in 66.7% of the studies. The results indicated that in two out of the three studies (66.7%), combined physical exercise was not effective in reducing arterial stiffness in hypertensive and prehypertensive individuals. Therefore, it is concluded that further experimental studies involving combined resistance and aerobic exercise interventions, conducted with greater methodological rigor, are needed to verify whether a significant reduction in arterial stiffness can indeed be achieved in these specific groups.
