Validation of an Anthropometric Equation for the Estimation of Body Fat in Adult Men

Abstract

Introduction: Precise body fat estimation is crucial in clinical and research settings due to its impact on health. While methods like DXA or bioimpedance are costly, anthropometric equations such as Montenegro's offer a practical alternative. This study evaluates its accuracy in men aged 20-55, comparing it to Jackson-Pollock, CUN-BAE, and Deurenberg. Methods: Data from 864 men were analyzed, including weight, height, and skinfold measurements. Body fat percentage was calculated using all four equations. Statistical analysis included correlation (ICC), Student's t-tests, and Bland-Altman agreement analysis. Results: Montenegro showed moderate-strong correlation with Jackson-Pollock (ICC 0.7277). The t-test revealed the smallest mean difference (0.032, p=0.785), with no significant disparity. Bland-Altman analysis indicated minimal bias (0.0316) and narrow limits of agreement, while CUN-BAE and Deurenberg overestimated and showed greater variability. The Montenegro equation is: % Fat = 30.322 + (0.285 × WEIGHT) - (0.223 × HEIGHT) + (0.117 × AGE). Conclusion: The Montenegro equation is accurate, easy to use, and non-invasive, proving to be a valid tool for estimating body fat in adult men and outperforming similar alternatives.
