Effects of Aerobic Training on Leptin in Obese Individuals: An Integrative Review
Abstract
Obesity is related to excessive body fat accumulation and leptin resistance, a hormone that regulates appetite and energy balance. Aerobic training is an effective strategy to combat obesity, as it can improve leptin function, helping to control appetite and promote weight loss. Additionally, aerobic exercise increases adiponectin levels, improving metabolism and weight control. Objective: To investigate the effects of aerobic training on leptin levels in obese individuals. Methodology: a comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, and Lilacs databases. Results: A total of 390 articles were found, with 193 excluded due to duplication. In the end, 10 studies were selected for meeting the eligibility criteria. Serum leptin levels were reduced in obese individuals who performed aerobic training in 9 studies (90%). Conclusion: Aerobic training promotes the reduction of leptin levels in obese individuals, associating this effect with weight regulation and insulin resistance. In addition to body fat loss, the duration and intensity of aerobic exercise are important factors. The combination of aerobic exercise with resistance training and dietary interventions proved to be more effective in reducing leptin than exercise alone.
