Swimming Initiation for Children: An Analysis of Teaching Methods at a Swimming School

Abstract

The teaching of swimming initiation requires attention to the motor and psychological development of students, especially children. This study aims to investigate the teaching methodologies used by swimming teachers at a swimming school in Vale do Taquari/RS/BR in teaching swimming to children. A qualitative approach was adopted, with data collected through direct poolside observations and semi-structured interviews with the teachers. Six swimming lessons for children aged 6 to 9 years were observed, and the interviews addressed both the teacher' professional backgrounds and their pedagogical practices. The findings indicate that the organization of space, choice of materials, and the methodology applied by each teacher play a crucial role in the students' adaptation to the aquatic environment and technical development. One teacher prioritizes fun and socialization, creating a more playful and interactive learning environment, while the other focuses on teaching movement, promoting autonomy and precision in swimming techniques. The study concludes that both approaches effectively address the different needs of students and create an inclusive and motivating learning environment, with emphases that reflect each teacher’s pedagogical understanding.
