Analysis of Muscle Strength during Shoulder Rise in Rugby Players

Abstract

Rugby, a team sport with frequent collisions between players, demands a variety of movements that require upper limb skills, especially in throwing and tackling. Due to the scarcity of literature on the investigation of strength aspects related to the upper limbs in rugby players, it is necessary to find reasons that support the high incidence of injuries in the shoulder region. This study aims to quantify and analyze the muscular force generated during shoulder elevation in maximal isometric contraction, comparing rugby players with individuals trained in strength training. A comparison was made of two samples containing 12 rugby players and 12 individuals trained in strength training, matched by sex, age, weight, height and dominant limb. Sample data was collected with a portable isometric dynamometer. The analysis of maximum strength was compared between rugby players (experimental) and the group of individuals trained in strength training (control) (p<0.05). It was found that the experimental group demonstrated greater strength compared to the control group (p<0.05) and when comparing the right and left upper limb within the same group, a balance in muscular strength was found. It was concluded that the results of this study indicate that rugby players demonstrated superior values of isometric muscle strength compared to individuals trained in strength training.
