Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviors in Women with Children

Abstract

A high percentage of women do not comply with the recommendations for physical activity and sedentary behavior, especially women with children. The objective of this cross-sectional study was to analyze the levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior of women with children and to find out if there are differences according to the number of children they have. Participants were 29 women with a mean age of 44.9 ± 8.7 years (14 women with 1 child and 15 with 2 children), who were users of a Gym in Viseu, Portugal. Data were obtained using the short version of the International Physical Activity Questionnaire. The number of children was also questioned for analysis purposes. About 72% of women do not meet the recommendations for moderate physical activity, 69% do not meet the recommendations for vigorous physical activity and 72% and 90% comply with the recommendations for sitting time (during the week and at the weekend respectively). No significant differences were found between women with 1 and 2 children in time of moderate (p=0.478), vigorous (p=0.516) and sitting time during the week (p=0.053) and weekend (p=0.405). Most of the women do not comply with the recommendations for moderate and vigorous physical activity and comply with the recommendations for sitting time. The number of children does not influence levels of physical activity and sedentary behavior.
