Intestinal Microbiota and Autism. An Integrative Review of the Literature
Abstract
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is characterized by deficits in communication and social interaction, as well as repetitive behaviors and sensory anomalies. The existence of a change in the intestinal microbiota is capable of influencing the gastrointestinal tract of individuals with ASD. Thus, the question arises: what is the role of the intestinal microbiota in ASD disorders? This study aims to review the literature on the influence of the intestinal microbiota on ASD. As for the methodology, this is an integrative literature review study of a descriptive nature, carried out from June to September 2022, in the Virtual Health Library - BVS, MEDLINE via Pubmed , SciELO and LILACS, using as keywords "Disorder of Autistic Spectrum", "intestinal microbiota" and "nutrition", analyzing articles from the last 10 years, in Portuguese, English and Spanish. After the survey, 105 works were found, and with careful filtering, 11 articles were selected. The analysis showed that patients with ASD evolve to some degree of intestinal inflammation and depending on the severity, changes in the intestinal microbiota are directly related to symptoms such as abdominal swelling, constipation and disaccharidase deficiency. In fact, the common selective eating pattern of ASD causes alterations in the microbiota as well as the deficiency of important vitamins and minerals that also contribute to the occurrence of this disorder. It is concluded that the study presents the influence of the intestinal microbiota on ASD, which can serve as a basis for future investigations.
