Prevalence of Risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome in Physical Therapy Students
Abstract
Obstructive Sleep Apnea Syndrome (OSAS) is characterized by obstructive apneas and hypopneas that are generated by the repetitive collapse of the upper airways during sleep. Although it has a high prevalence in older population, the existence of comorbidities like obesity and overweight, can in increase it up to ten times more in general population. The objective of this work was to know the prevalence of OSAS in physiotherapy students from the Health Sciences area of a Public University of Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche, México. A quantitative study was carried out, applying the Berlin questionnaire to detect risk factors; sociodemographic data were recorded, as well as the presence of apnea and snoring, daytime sleepiness, high blood pressure and body mass index. IBM SPSS.20 Software was used for data analysis, using dispersion values for the numerical variables, percentages, and frequencies in the nominal scale measurements. Results: show that 33.05% of the physiotherapy students are at high risk of developing OSAS, 70% were women, 88% presented obesity. The development of strategies for care and prevention of comorbidities associated with OSAS will be essential to meet the needs of the students, even in times of COVID-19 pandemic where the approach takes place in a virtual environment.
