Doctoral Thesis Summary

"Physical-sporty activity in Almeria Post Compulsory Education Centres and in the University of Almeria. The evolution of the physical-sporty habits in the student."

This research analyses and determines the existence of changes in the behaviour, attitude and motivation through the years in groups of students from Post Compulsory Secondary Education and the University of Almeria, through the schoolyear 2001/02. Several populations, previously researched by investigators Hernández Rodríguez through the schoolyear 1996/97 and Ruiz Juan through 1998/99, and whose results have been used to develop a tendency longitudinal analysis, to an extent in time from three to five years. Furthermore, a transversal analysis between the two populations has been carried out.

To achieve the goals stated in this research, a quantitative investigation methodology is selected, employing descriptive methods, the questioning as technique and the questionnaire as tool. Three have been the populations purpose of this research. On one hand, the Almeria Students of Post Secondary Education Centres and on the other hand, the first and second cycle students from the University of Almeria. For the selection of the sample of each of the populations, a stratified sampling procedure with proportional affixation has been used, notifying that in one of the sampling stages, conglomerates were used on the Post Compulsory Secondary Education population. Thus, the Post Compulsory Secondary Education representative sample is 1,016 people, that from the University's first cycle is 991 people, and the one from the University's second cycle is 843 people. This fact presupposes a validity in the results with a ± 3% sample margin of error and a reliability level of 95.5%. The on-field research was carried out between February and May 2002, being applied in the classrooms the standard questionnaire in a self-administrated way under the questioner surveillance.

Conclusions on the available free time state that nevertheless the type of population, there is still a relationship between the analysed period of time and the available period of time; thus, in the working days not much time is available, enough time is available at the weekends, and a lot of time is available on holiday periods. Through the years, the existence of changes in the availability of free time has been eventually demonstrated, refusing the presence of behaviour lineal schemes.

Regarding the occupation of the free time, it has been demonstrated that it is still marked by the time periods of life, occupying the free time during the weekdays with passive hobbies, with social relationship and fun activities at the weekends, and active hobbies and sports on holiday periods. It is interesting to underline the relationship that exists between a higher availability of continued free time and the practice o physical-sporty activities.

Dealing with the attitudes related to physical-sporty activity, it is still found the presence of a marked interest in the practice of this type of activities, although it decreases through the years. Positive valuations of the physical education classes carried out by the students, together with favourable attitudes from the parents towards the practice of physical-sporty activities during their children free time, influence positively in the interest of the latter towards this type of practices.

Another conclusion obtained from this research is that one only motivation does not determine the different behaviours in the practice of physical-sporty activities, but the lack of time and will and laziness the main reasons for the inactivity, while the active people most important reasons are related to health and social relations.

We can affirm that a decrease in the practising rate has been set, considerably increasing as well the abandon of physical-sporty activities and remaining stable the percentage of students who have never been active. Through the years, it has been shown the existence of an association between the frequency of practice and the type of physical-sporty activity practiced, being preferred -nevertheless the type of activity-the self and non-competitive practice. We can also affirm that the most practised and offered physical-sporty activities are, as well, the most demanded, being also found an association between the analysed period of time and the type of the demanded activities. We have found a homogeneous demand during the holiday periods in the three populations, subject of this research, preferring these the free and non-competitive practice of physical-sporty activities.

From this research, the work done and the conclusions found as a result, new challenges come across, new subjects of study are discovered in such a way that it is fundamental to keep on searching or begin a new research.
