A Critique of Research in Japanese Physical Education: |

Foreign scholars have detected and investigated many dark sides of their countries' PE. It is about time for Japanese scholars to engage in that pursuit. Japanese PE cannot afford to have these ideological, political issues hidden away from society. The research community has to bring them into debate in order to inform and provide people with up-dated information. After all, we, educators and researchers, are the ones responsible for providing people not only with the knowledge pertinent to our causes, but with all sorts of knowledge, in order to empower people to choose and create their own experience.
If people's experience is shaped and fed by only one method, we have to consider that people's assumptions, values and practices must be in accordance with the method in question. Only those who could afford to expose themselves to other approaches to reality are capable of comprehending, discerning and being preoccupied with the future of Japanese PE. The only possible way for Japanese PE to evaluate the damage already caused to people's experience and to assess the sort of society PE is bound to foster is by approaching PE, and society as well, from supplemental alternative methodological perspectives.
