Resumen
Las imágenes construidas por la historia tradicional del fútbol argentino referidas al origen social de los primeros futbolistas criollos, estructuraron un esquema en el cual se concebía al "pibe gambeteando en el potrero" como origen del deporte nacional. Intento aquí contrastarlas con algunos de los resultados de mis investigaciones acerca de la formación de los sectores populares porteños y su cultura, de principios del siglo XX, mirados a través del fenómeno de la popularización de la práctica del fútbol.

NEW CONTRIBUTIONS CONCERNING THE HISTORY OF ARGENTINE SOCCERKey words: History. Argentine Soccer. Popular Sectors.
Abstract
The traditional history of Argentine soccer and of the first "criollo" soccer players construes social origin images which conceive the young boy dribbling in an empty lot as the forerunner of the national sport today. Recent research on the formation of the popular sectors of "porteño" society and their culture at the beginning of the Twentieth Century shows several contrasts to these images, when viewed from the standpoint of the popularization phenomenon of soccer playing.
